about

Every mask lit by the sun now, he can see black indents that divide the faces into 4 even parts: one for each eye and one for the left and right sides of the mouth. He is satisfied with the yellow mask, and part of him wishes he could wear it forever. But this beautiful lie cannot last. He remembers the gnarled red mask on the floor, still staring at him. Each gaze cuts into him like sun rays to albino eyes. The eyes of the yellow mask are too narrow, and he cannot see the world in all its dark truths. One mask remains: one whose wide eyes will allow him to see it all. He puts on the blue mask.

lyrics

[Elijah]

As I turn around (turn around) in sunlight they bask.
New black crosses – all of my losses – ‘cross every mask.
Through these snake slits, I simply can’t see, I need more.
Gaping eyes of the blue mask call me to their whispering shore.
