Elijah stands in a small clearing. He is surrounded on all sides by tall grasses three times his size and about as thick, waving silently like a net of jellyfish tendrils in the deep ocean. In the center of the clearing stands a thin white pedestal about half his height. On it lies the key, with its swirling black and white center and warm pink glow. It could be his way out of this land. All he needs to do is touch it, and he feels its secrets will be revealed. He sits for a moment or two, contemplating his decision – and waiting for it to end, for him to leave this place just by closing his eyes and opening them to someplace new. But it never happens. Finally, Elijah makes up his mind. Elijah passes the key, and stops walking just before he gets to the barrier of weeds. He reaches out to touch them, and takes a step forward. But before he can enter, a patient hand pushes on his chest from the weeds. He looks up and sees a raven-haired young woman gazing at his eyes. She lifts his mask to see his true face. A part of him still wants to lean in and sweep her from her feet, but he knows it is time for him to find his own way. He takes her hand, uses it to pull his mask back down, and shoves her to the side. He moves past her, knowing that if he looked back he could stay forever. And he takes a step into the weeds beyond.
lyrics
[Elijah]
Standing in a clearing,
Surrounded on all sides,
Jellyfish tendril grasses
Three times my size.
Thin, white, pedestal
About half my height,
On it lies a key
Swirling black and white.
But I search for me,
So I pass the key.
Patient hand on my chest,
Raven hair, raven eyes.
[Girl from the weeds (Lucienne)]
Let me see your weathered face
Those feelings I’ll replace.
[Elijah]
She pulls at my mask, and
I touch her hand, and…
I pull the mask down,
And shove her away.
I know she has no right to stay, but I
Could stay here forever:
Be fooled by a yellow fawn.
But I must take this one step now
Into the great beyond!
